American Beauty Movie Review
With Oscar season upon us, let’s discuss a film that won 5 of them: American Beauty.
It’s a truly amazing movie, in every aspect of film, making a dark, comedic drama about your typical suburban family: dysfunctional. The film marked the debut of first time great writer in Alan Bell, and a first time great director in Sam Mendes, who both won the Oscar for their respective catagory, along with Kevin Spacey asbest actor, playing Lester Burnham, a man in a mid life crisis. Lester Burnham’s antics in this film include getting obsessed with his teenage daughter’s best friend, played by the sexy Mena Suvari, quitting his job spontaneously, buying classic cars, and a sudden infatuation with marijuana and working out.
The movie starts off with a glimpse in their dysfunctional home, even though they play it off to the outside world that everything is fine. Filled with plenty of shocking twists you never saw coming, and content that will make you think about your own life, American Beauty is a film that excels on all levels. The writing goes perfect with the direction which goes perfect with the production. Although Kevin Spacey won the Oscar for best actor, he doesn’t stand out as the main featured actor in this film, with a excellent supporting cast. It was a group effort from Kevin Spacey, with Annette Benning as his wife, Thora Birch as his daughter, even Peter Gallagher, who plays Buddy Kane, the “real estate king”. Everything in the film clicks, and American Beauty is a film you will watch over and over again, which like wine, will get better .with age. Do yourself a favor, and rent American Beait, hell, even go out and buy it, its that good.
